Pallavi's Research Project

First proposal.

What is the theme or topic area that you are hoping to investigate in your research project?

To understand the uniqueness of sunburn and why has it become such a big festival?

Can you identify two or more questions that the research will help you go some way towards answering?

1. Why is it such a big thing?

2. How has it got promoted?

3. Understand stories related to Sunburn Festival.

What sort of approaches will you employ to collect data for your research enquiry? For Example if you were going to interview students- how many would you interview? What sorts of themes would you be questioning them about?

Read up existing articles on Sunburn..

Interview –

1)People who have visited the festival.

2) Djs.

3)Organisers.

4)Future visitors to the festival.

Study different genres of music played at the festival.

What is the purpose of your research? Why is it useful?

As a communication designer it will help me in developing my promotion design techniques, since to study the uniqueness of the festival I will have to look at various other events and their promotion designs which will help me compare and understand how this festival is unique.

article on sun burn festival.
Early in 2007, the good folks at PDM Entertainment decided the time was right to set a new standard for music events in India. Having traveled extensively and witnessing festivals around the globe, Devraj Sanyal, Manuj Agarwal and Aman Anand felt it was time for India to host it’s own music festival.

They decided to partner with Nikhil Chinapa – MTV presenter and Dance Music evangelist, who when contacted took all of a millisecond to join their bandwagon.

Together they decided to create Sunburn – A festival that we could call our own. It was to be Asia’s premier two-day festival of global talent. It was to have the best DJ talent in the world, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the best talent in India, and on the same stage. It was a festival with technicians and crew from India – with an audience that was primarily Indian, but with a global outlook.

Deciding the location for this madness to take place was easy – GOAAAAAAAAAAA - A place where music goes hand in hand with life. The scene was set- hanging out with your best friends on the sandy beaches of Candolim, the sun setting into the Arabian sea, chilled beer in both hands and a DJ spinning some kickass tunes! The thought of it made us squeal like high school girls at a BSB re-union… NOT!! But you know what we mean J

The DJ lineup began with the first World # 1 “Three Deck Wizard” aka Carl Cox confirming a spot at Sunburn, joining him were Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki of Above and Beyond. We also had Axwell and John 00 Fleming graciously accept our invite to burn up the stage. Indian fusion group MIDIval Punditz were ready to add to the festival a bit of Indian flair, DJ Pearl would also bring her usual power packed performance. The internationally acclaimed Jalebee Cartel were also set to play at Sunburn.

It was no easy feat putting together the festival, but, with grit and determination and severe lack of sleep and many, many cans of "restorative spirits” we managed to steady our nerves and make Sunburn happen! Eventually, over 40 DJs, musicians, video jockeys and emcees graced Sunburn’s stages.

We had entertainers, entrepreneurs and various other enthusiasts who honored us with their support. This is when Sunburn became an “Indian Festival with Global Outlook” and not just another Music Fest. We had fire dancers, fire starters =), Poi dancers, merchants who brought the flea market to life, chefs who wanted to share culinary delights of their countries- all in all a very exciting amalgamation of people.

DJs and festival go-ers hugged each other when it ended and at least one person had to be peeled off a coconut tree by security when the lights finally came on at the end of day 2.

I would’ve just left him there with food and water – coz we’re gonna be back in exactly one year for Sunburn 2008.

After the success of the first Sunburn, the expectations for the second year were skyrocketing, and if we now “veterans” thought that it would be easier to put together this year, we were in for a rude shock!

Sunburn - The Electric Circus, was scheduled for the month of December, but November proved to be a dark time for our country when we were attacked by terrorists and we in a state of trepidation. The government asked us to pay heed to the terror threats, at first we considered, but, one of the reasons Sunburn was created to promote peaceful coexistence and breaking barriers with music. Canceling the festival would just let terror reign and we weren’t about to let that happen. So we irreverently asked the terrorists to take their threats and shove it up a particular orifice.

Sunburn 2008 - The Electric Circus, was a victory over terror much like David to Goliath, for us, it was equal parts Chopin inspired beauty and ferocious wildness. It was heartwarming to see all the artists, who had committed themselves for the event, trust us and come play at Sunburn. No terrorism could dampen this festival of music, positive spirit and life. The encouragement we received from so many people from all over the world who ensured the success of Sunburn has left us in an almost Ketamine like haze!

This year, we had a larger than life line-up of artists at Sunburn with the suave John 00 Fleming returning to our festival this time with Digital Blonde. A lot of new talent was showcased with the Growling Mad Scientists (GMS) spinning some truly mental tracks, Defected Records were represented by Shapeshifter, Gareth Emery awed the audience with his unique style, Jalebee Cartel made a re-appearance after blowing us away with their performance last year. DJ Pearl was back with a bang enthralling the crowd with magic spinning skills. MIDIval Punditz outdid themselves and left us wanting so much more! Richard Durand proved to us why he is one of the most passionate and technically sound DJs with his worldwide acclaimed sound rocking the festival. Norman Doray left the atmosphere electric after his set. We also had the pleasure of listening to the energetic Ma Faiza, the trippy Karan “Third Eye” Bhoj, and the uber cool DJ Shah.

The Sunburn sophomores partied up a manic storm like the pros that they are while the freshmen took a freefall into the sweet intoxicating music that our powerhouse talent pool let loose. Let it be said that the initiation into the Sunburn frathouse is by far the most endorphin inducing activity even for the socially awkward ;)

We’d like to thank all you beautiful lunatics for making

Sunburn 2008 – The Electric Circus
Last year they told us not to go to Goa - but we did. They said the beaches would be locked down and the parties cancelled.. but we chose not to listen. All that we heard was the frenetic drum beat in our minds and calling of the setting sun over the Arabian sea. All that we saw were the masses of gyrating festival-folk, in beach shorts and bikini clad, smiling, happy, unwashed (we’re non-judgemental but we do get grossed out!! Go take a dip in the sea!) and to this day we wonder, why the bloody hell didn't we get hold of a deodorant manufacturer as a sponsor

This year at Sunburn, expect much more than you could have ever dreamed of! Not only are we going to deliver the music that you all love, we’re also breaking into some new genres that we feel deserve showcasing. If you thought the festival was good, great, fun, mind-blowing or any other positive adjective that you might want to use, then how do we prepare you for what’s about to come?!?

Think big, no, no, think BIGGER!! If you thought that the festival was only to bring music to your ears then think again we’re adding dedicated space for live visuals! Fasten your seatbelts for the thrills that are about jolt you like lightening in Teresina and leave you in a puddle of happy goop!

Calling all fearless warriors, emotionally stunted corporate sucks, internet tycoons, recently single ready to mingle, goody-two-shoes, rebels with and without a cause, blacksheep, white sheep; this means YOU!! Hell we’re even calling the Little Green Men out in space if they can hear us.

after the first meeting with my mentor, the following was discussed regarding the research question :

-look at what is the importance of such music festival in India.

-how as it grown over the years .

-kind of people visiting the festival.

-what is the influence of this festival on our economy and culture.

after a few discussions and arguments, me and my mentor came to a conclusion that I should not take this project forward since sun burn happens in december and i wanted to go and cover it through photography, and then that would be too late for the research project and too early for the design project, then we thought that I could study from the existing resources available and also the second problem was that it just happens once a year so watever i would will be in the those available three days. Then, since I was interested in doing something related to photography or music and also do something related to sun burn. so i thought I ll study the kind of music they play at sun burn that "electronic music". So, I decided to study electronic music scene in Delhi.

2nd Proposal !!:

Main question : To know about Electronic Music scene in Delhi.

sub questions :

- why all of a sudden Indians are adapting to , listening to or liking this genre of music.

- are they influenced by western culture for example. Sun burn has become a rage now and it is mostly visited by people from all over the world.

- has India reached at the same level internationally as far as electronic music is concerned.

What sort of approaches will you employ to collect data for your research enquiry? For Example if you were going to interview students- how many would you interview? What sorts of themes would you is questioning them about?

- interview

music bands

people who listen to this kind of music

club owners

dj's

event managers

promoters

what is the purpose of my research

i thought as a communication designer i would want to promote this genre of music and studying it in detail and it s present scenario in India would help me promote it better.

Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments andelectronic music technology in its production.[1] In general a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means and that produced using electronic technology.[2]Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar. Purely electronic sound production can be achieved using devices such as the Theremin, sound synthesizer, and computer.[3]

Electronic music was once associated almost exclusively with Western art musicbut from the late 1960s on the availability of affordable music technology meant that music produced using electronic means became increasingly common in the popular domain.[4] Today electronic music includes many varieties and ranges from experimental art music to popular forms such as electronic dance music.
